What is Pilates?

1. Pilates, pioneered by the late Joseph Pilates (1880-1967) is a mind-body, non-impact resistance exercise system designed to strengthen the weak and challenge the strong. Pilates was a German expatriate who first made his mark in England during WWI when he developed a series of exercises and innovative equipment to help injured prisoners of war regain strength and mobility.

The central aim of Pilates is to create a fusion of mind and body so that movement is efficient, balanced and graceful. It is the perfect workout balancing strength and stretch. Pilates focuses on proper alignment and form, emphasizing quality of movement verses quantity. It builds long lean muscles through core abdominal strength, increases stamina and creates great stability. What more could we want from an exercise program?

What is the STOTT PILATES® Method?

3. STOTT PILATES is a contemporary approach to the original exercise method pioneered by the late Joseph Pilates. Co-founders Moira and Lindsay G. Merrithew, along with a team of physical therapists, sports medicine and fitness professionals, have spent over two decades refining the STOTT PILATES method of exercise and equipment. This resulted in the inclusion of modern principles of exercise science and spinal rehabilitation making it one of the safest and effective methods available. This clear and detailed approach forms the basis for STOTT PILATES training and certification programs. It’s used by rehab and prenatal clients, athletes, celebrities and everyone in between. Why is Pilates the fastest-growing method of exercise?

4. People are becoming increasingly more interested in methods of fitness that help relieve stress. They’re also much more interested in prevention of injury and taking care of their bodies. They want to stay fit and look good for as long as possible. Pilates is complementary to many traditional ways of working out. It’s excellent for all ages, fitness levels and goals. Its mind-body aspect is even said to be useful in preventing stress-related illnesses.

What are the benefits of STOTT PILATES?

5.

  • Longer, Leaner Muscles: Balancing strength and flexibility not only allows you to achieve a long, lean look; it allows your body to move with ease.
  • Improves Postural Problems: The STOTT PILATES method recognizes and restores the important shock-absorbing features of the spine’s natural curves.
  • Flattens, Tones and Strengthens Core: Instead of doing endless sit-ups, lower reps of exercises are performed with more control. This combined with a constant focus on torso stability is what makes STOTT PILATES exercise famous for yielding a strong core!
  • Prevents Injury: STOTT PILATES exercises strengthen muscles concentrically and eccentrically, which improves muscular control thereby preventing injury.
  • Balances Strength With Flexibility: Most of us have over trained our muscles by doing way too much forward bending and not nearly enough stretching and strengthening of the back. The STOTT PILATES method works on rebalancing the muscles around the joints to work effectively and reduce chance of injury.
  • Heightens Body Awareness: By identifying and strengthening the body’s deeper support system – the muscles of the torso – you learn how to move efficiently. Walking, running and even tying your shoes becomes easier.
  • Heightens Concentration: This is no mindless exercise program! By being conscious of your muscles and how to control them, you gradually strengthen the powerful mind-body connection. This heightened awareness and focus carries over into everyday life.
  • Improves Balance, Coordination & Circulation: As you develop strength and control, STOTT PILATES exercises become more challenging by adding increased demands on balance and coordination. It is very satisfying to master the progression.
  • Enhances Athletic Performance: Because of the precision performance, focus and injury prevention, athletes both amateur and professional have noticed a marked difference in their games Can be customized to suit everyone from rehab patients, pre and postnatal clients to elite athletes. No-impact and therefore easy on the joints.

How does STOTT PILATES differ from weight training or other resistance exercise?

6.

  • Pilates is three-dimensional (i.e. exercises can be performed using all movement planes).
  • Spring resistance more closely resembles muscular contraction so there is less stress on tendons and ligaments.
  • Emphasis on concentric and eccentric contraction for injury prevention.
  • STOTT PILATES is customizable for special needs.
  • In Pilates exercise, emphasis is placed on rebalancing muscles around the joints, thereby correcting over-training and muscle imbalances.
  • Pilates emphasizes balancing strength with flexibility (for injury prevention and more efficient movement).
  • STOTT PILATES exercise leads to an improvement in posture and body awareness.
  • Weight training and STOTT PILATES can be combined in a fitness program and are a great compliment to each other.

Is STOTT PILATES like Yoga

8. In some respects, Pilates is like Yoga. Both are considered mind-body methods of movement; both emphasize deep breathing and smooth, long movements that encourage the mind-body connection. The difference is that while Yoga requires moving from one static posture to the next, Pilates flows through a series of movements that are more dynamic, systematic and anatomically-based incorporating resistance equipment. The goal with STOTT PILATES exercise is to strengthen the postural muscles while achieving optimal functional fitness.

Will I get the same results from Mat Class as with a Reformer or other equipment?

9. Mat-based workouts are very convenient and can be done anywhere. Adding light equipment and the larger resistance equipment will place more emphasis on your outer limbs and add variety and intensity to your workout.
