So what is Pilates Exactly? Pilates, pioneered by the late Joseph Pilates (1880-1967) is a mind-body, non-impact resistance exercise system designed to strengthen the weak and challenge the strong. The central aim of Pilates is to create a fusion of mind and body so that movement is efficient, balanced and graceful. It is the perfect workout balancing strength and stretch. Pilates focuses on proper alignment and form, emphasizing quality of movement verses quantity. It builds long lean muscles through core abdominal strength, increases stamina and creates great stability. What more could we want from an exercise program?

Do Men do Pilates?
Many men still consider Pilates a workout for women, but Joseph Pilates who originated the exercises was a boxer and his exercises were designed for men. Most men still think the best way to a strong, toned body is by lifting heavy weights! True, this does lead to an enviable physique HOWEVER this method lacks balance and flexibility. Pilates for men emphasizes correcting the imbalances (which often lead to injury) as Pilates works the underlying stabilizing muscles that support movement.
Men who have incorporated Pilates into their routines have experienced greater flexibility and improved range of motion which have translated into improved accuracy and performance in their sport or activity. It is no wonder that Pilates has been incorporated into the workout routines of professional football, basketball, baseball and golf.

Pre-Post Natal:
Many women find Pilates to be one of the best exercises to do, both during and after their pregnancy. Here’s why: Pilates strengthens and tones the abdominal, pelvic floor and back safely and quickly. Women who practice safe abdominal strengthening during pregnancy have less low back pain, less pelvic pain, better mobility, easier deliveries and faster recoveries. Another benefit of Pilates and Pregnancy is that Pilates is very adaptable. Most exercises can be modified so that they work for a changing body and the workout can be individualized for anyone’s ability. It is important to continue strengthening and re-balancing the muscles around the joints - supporting the body as it goes through postural changes related to pregnancy.
It is extremely important to work with a qualified certified instructor who can provide the necessary modifications and one on one attention.
Pilates also helps new moms get their bodies back after the baby is born. Pilates will prepare you for the new demands of motherhood: breastfeeding, lifting and carrying a small child to name a few. After childbirth, the oblique muscles are very weak as these muscles are stretched out and have been used extensively in labor. When these muscles are weak they can cause back pain. Pilates will help you regain your strength, tone and shape! |
